If you’ve ever noticed colorful strips of tape on an athlete at the Olympics, a rider at a horse show, or a weekend warrior at your local rec center, there’s a good chance you were looking at kinesiotape. It looks a little mysterious if you’ve never had it explained — but the concept is simple, and it can be genuinely useful for people who want to keep moving without waiting for soreness to pass on its own.

What does it actually do?

Kinesiotape (also called kinesiology tape or K-tape) is a thin, flexible elastic tape that moves with your body instead of restricting it. Unlike the rigid athletic tape you’d use to immobilize a sprained ankle, kinesiotape is designed to support soft tissue while letting you stay fully mobile.

When applied correctly, it gently lifts the skin away from the tissue underneath, which can improve circulation, reduce swelling, and take some load off muscles and tendons that are working overtime. It’s not magic — but for the right situation, it can be the difference between sitting out and staying in the game.

Who tends to benefit?

Kinesiotaping works well for active people who need to keep functioning despite minor injuries, inflammation, or repetitive-use soreness. That includes gardeners and landscapers dealing with knee, shoulder, or wrist strain; riders and equestrians managing lower back or hip soreness from long hours in the saddle; tradespeople whose work demands sustained, awkward positions all day; weekend athletes recovering from a tough game who don’t want to lose a full week of activity; and caregivers or parents who spend the day lifting, carrying, and bending — over and over.

Does it work?

The research is genuinely mixed, and it would be misleading to say kinesiotaping is a standalone fix for every issue. But used as part of a broader care plan — alongside hands-on treatment, movement work, and addressing the root cause — it can meaningfully extend what people are able to do between appointments. Think of it as support, not a solution by itself.

Application matters a lot. The direction, tension, and placement of the tape change what it does, which is why it works best when applied by someone who knows what they’re treating. If you’ve been curious about it, ask at your next visit — it takes about five minutes and might just help you keep doing what you love.

Summer has a way of turning up the volume on everything — the garden needs tending, the kids want to do all the things, the deck needs staining, and somehow you’re also supposed to fit in a round of golf. Your back is working overtime. Here are four ways to keep it moving right through Labor Day.

1. Lift smarter on the job and in the yard

Whether you’re hauling mulch bags, loading lumber, or wrestling a lawnmower up a hill, the mechanics are the same: hinge at the hips, brace your core, and keep the load close to your body. It sounds obvious until hour three of landscaping — so set a reminder to reset your form before you pick anything up. Your back will still be with you for the next project.

2. Drink water like it’s your job

The discs between your vertebrae are mostly water. When you’re dehydrated — and outdoor summer work dehydrates you fast — they compress more under load, which is a recipe for stiffness and soreness by the end of the day. Aim for at least half your body weight in ounces, more if you’re sweating. It’s one of the simplest things you can do to stay loose and functional all season.

3. Be choosy about your footwear

Flip-flops are basically summer’s default shoe, and they’re fine for a quick trip across the yard. But spend a full day in them — mowing, walking the farmers market, standing on hard concrete — and you’ve taken away the arch support and cushioning your whole kinetic chain depends on. Your feet connect to your ankles, knees, hips, and spine. A little more support goes a long way.

4. Give your hip flexors some love

All that time sitting — whether you’re commuting, watching games, or recovering after a long day outside — shortens the hip flexors, which directly pulls on the lower back. A simple 30-second kneeling stretch each morning can make a real difference in how your back feels by afternoon. Your hips and your back are in a relationship. Keep it a healthy one.

Small adjustments to how you move through summer can protect your back so you’re not sidelined when there’s still plenty of season left to enjoy.

You probably already know that what you eat affects your energy, your weight, and your long-term health. But there’s another connection worth paying attention to: the link between your diet and how your joints feel day to day. If you wake up stiff, ache after a long day in the garden, or notice your knees complain more some weeks than others — your eating patterns might be part of the picture.

The inflammation connection

A lot of the joint soreness people feel — that low-grade stiffness and achiness that slows you down — is driven by systemic inflammation. This isn’t the acute inflammation of a fresh injury. It’s the chronic, low-level kind that builds quietly in the background, influenced significantly by what you eat repeatedly over time.

Highly processed foods, refined sugars, and certain cooking oils can turn up the dial on that background inflammation. Anti-inflammatory foods — like fatty fish, leafy greens, berries, nuts, and olive oil — can turn it back down. Over weeks and months, the difference is real and measurable in how you feel and how you move.

Foods that tend to help

Fatty fish — salmon, sardines, mackerel — are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which actively reduce inflammatory markers. Leafy greens like spinach, kale, and arugula are packed with antioxidants and vitamin K, both important for joint health. Berries — especially tart cherries and blueberries — are well-studied for their anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is one of the most researched natural anti-inflammatories available; the active compound curcumin is worth incorporating regularly (try it in a golden milk recipe — it’s easier to make than it sounds). Olive oil contains oleocanthal, a compound with effects similar to ibuprofen at a cellular level. And walnuts are an excellent plant-based omega-3 source.

Foods that tend to make things worse

On the other side: ultra-processed snacks, added sugars, refined carbohydrates, and trans fats are consistently linked to higher levels of inflammatory markers. That doesn’t mean you can never eat them. It means that if you’re eating them regularly and your joints are giving you trouble, there may be a straightforward connection worth looking at.

It’s not a substitute for care — but it’s not nothing, either

Diet alone won’t undo structural issues, and it’s not a replacement for hands-on treatment. But it’s one of the levers you can pull between appointments. People who eat in a way that keeps systemic inflammation lower often find they feel better, move better, and recover faster — not because food is medicine in some overstated sense, but because your body has an easier time doing what it’s supposed to do when it’s not fighting a constant low-grade fire.

If you want to talk through how your diet and your overall musculoskeletal health might be connected, it’s a conversation we’re glad to have as part of your care.
