Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) ?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a medical condition that occurs due to a compression of a long nerve (called the median nerve) that runs through your hand, wrist, up your arm, and connects to the spinal cord.
Your wrist is comprised of 8 “carpal” bones, which allow it to bend and move. There is a tunnel through these bones, the carpal tunnel, through which the median nerve travels. CTS usually occurs from repetitive motions, such as repeated assembly line work or constant typing, or intricate hand work like knitting that causes this carpal tunnel area in the wrist to swell. The swelling leads to symptoms such as weakness, tingling, or numbness in the hand and wrist. Other conditions such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, or arthritis can also lead to Carpal Tunnel over time. Carpal Tunnel may also occur during pregnancy.
Typical management of CTS by medical doctors is to prescribe physical therapy or medication to relieve the symptoms. If none of these options work, then a physician may recommend surgery. Chiropractic care may be a better way to treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and avoid using medication or having invasive surgeries.
How Chiropractic May Help
Because Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by issues along the median nerve, the less nerve interference there is, the less frequently your symptoms will occur. Chiropractic care works to reduce the nerve interference in the hand, arms, and spine so that blood will flow properly and pain and discomfort will decrease or dissolve altogether. In one study, chiropractic adjustments of the wrist and hand in elderly patients greatly reduced chronic pain, such as that of Carpal Tunnel.
Corrects Misalignments, Specifically the Carpal Tunnel
By treating the root of the symptoms, a swollen carpal tunnel, Lafayette chiropractor Dr. Takacs is able to address the problem. Adjustments to the spine, wrist, and hand will remove nerve interference so that the brain can send proper messages to your body so it can work more efficiently. It is crucial to address the heart of the problem through chiropractic adjustments so that your body works effectively, and Dr. Takacs can help. Adjustments of the wrist and spine will address the carpal tunnel area, but adjustment of the whole spine can also increase overall spinal health and whole body health. Additionally, because the median nerve is connected to the spine, correcting spinal misalignments will allow your body to function at its best, which will help decrease the painful symptoms of Carpal Tunnel. In another study, a 42-year-old woman complained of pain, tingling, and numbness in her right wrist due to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. After receiving chiropractic adjustments to the spine, elbow, and wrist 3 times a week for 4 weeks, she noticed increased strength in her hand as well as dissipating symptoms, proof that consistent chiropractic care can work.
